7 celebrity breakups that shattered our belief in Happily Ever Afters in 2023
2023 has been a wild year in the celebrity couple world. We’ve had unlikely pairings that have taken over the world, in the form of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, but we’ve also had some shocking long-term breakups that not even the most talked about relationship in celeb history can help us get over.
Each year, celebrity couples come and go, and many short-term flings have come and gone. But this year, many who we thought would be together forever just didn’t make it. Let’s take a look back at seven pairings that broke our hearts over the past 12 months.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner

This one came as a shock to everyone, especially the Jo’ Bro fans. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner split after “four wonderful years of marriage,” and two kids in September.
The exact reasoning is unknown, however, in their joint statement, they shut down any “speculative narratives.” One of these involves claims of the TV star saying something on the ring doorbell cam, but whether there’s any truth to this, or what was said, remains unknown.
As for a reconciliation, well it looks unlikely as the GOT star looks to have moved on with Pergereine Pearson. Although it doesn’t seem like they’re official just yet.
Joe Jonas on the other hand seems to be chilling with his brothers on tour, and overtaking TikTok. But we’re sure his DM requests are flooded.
Longest celeb breakup of 2023 – Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness

After 27 years of marriage, there wasn’t anyone who wasn’t shocked about this one. That’s longer than Sophie Turner has been on this earth!
Again, the long-standing former couple didn’t state an exact reason, but said their “journey was shifting”.
“We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,” they said in their sole statement to PEOPLE.
Hugh Jackman has been sighted after the split and hanging out with friends Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively in New York. Although, one body language expert raised concerns he was hiding his pain.
The couple share two children together, Oscar Maximilian Jackman and Ava Eliot Jackman.
Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez
Although the couple stayed out of the spotlight, this one was still heartbreaking for Ariana Grande fans everywhere, who thought she’d finally found her happiness.
It looks like, unfortunately, the lyrics “Only wanna do it once, real bad, Gon’ make that last,” didn’t work for the pop star.
The couple officially filed for divorce in September after two years of marriage. However, to public knowledge, it looks like there’s no bad blood between the two and their lifestyles just didn’t mix.
But it’s not all bad news, as she seems to have found romance again with Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. Again, the couple are keeping things on the down low, but with the release of the blockbuster next year, who knows what will happen.
Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford

Although Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford weren’t dating for long, their split still broke the hearts of fans across the globe. Just look at that adorable pic!
The pair were first spotted together in October 2022 and called it quits by May.
They often faced backlash for their 10-year age gap, however, her brother Finneas O’Connell defended the romance at the GQ Men of the Year party in November 2022.
“Listen, as long as she’s happy, I’m happy,” he told E! News.
Despite the breakup, the two are still on good terms, as the bad guy singer revealed they’re still very good friends.
Britney Spears and Sam Asghari

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari had been together since the end of 2016. However, they had only been married 18 months before they called it quits in August.
A little after the news broke, the star took to her Instagram to let fans in on how she was feeling. In the video, the Toxic singer told her 42 million followers she was “a little shocked” but it was “nobody’s business”.
“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together… Six years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but… I’m not here to explain why because it’s honestly nobody’s business,” she wrote.
“But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly,” she continued before thanking friends for her messages. “And actually, I’m doing pretty damn good,” she concluded.
The pair stated irreconcilable differences on the court docs.
Most recent celeb breakup of 2023 – Cardi B and Offset

The most recent celeb breakup in 2023 comes from music stars Cardi B and Offset. The pair have had breakups throughout their six-year relationship, but it seems like this time, it may be for good.
Rumors first started at the beginning of December, when the couple, who share two children, unfollowed each other on Instagram.
Just over a week later, the Bodak Yellow took to her social media calling him out over the split.
She claimed her husband was “ungrateful” and was tired of his behavior. Offset, at the time, was out enjoying his birthday celebrations in Miami with a group of friends, and girls.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello

Another long-term relationship ending was American Idol judge Sofia Vergara and her husband, Joe Manganiello.
The couple wed in 2015, before calling it off in July 2023. Their whirlwind love story began in 2014 when they got engaged after six months of dating.
In a statement to Page Six at the time, the Hollywood couple said: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people who love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for the respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”
